Peonies are rarely attacked by vermin, such as hares and deer since they normally, do not eat peonies. However, sometimes you might be able to see ants on the buds of your peonies, especially the perennial ones. There´s not much you can do about it, and for the most part,

that is a good thing!

Ants and peonies somehow belong together in a way, so there is nothing to worry about as they do no harm. The ants just want to enjoy the sugary liquid which peonies emits, while keeping other insects and pests away.

However, if you notice that there are too many ants on each bud, it might be time to try and do something about it, for example using an ant agent to see if that might help. If there are too many ants that lick the sugary, somewhat sticky fluid, buds might dry out and fall off.
